"The show must go on" and so was the case for the music.
Amongst the weekend sea of crowd in Saturday town, I arrived at the ZoukOut roadshow, already in play and located outside Heeren, Singapore. Nigel Hogan – in a comfortable beach-like outfit and sandals – was serenading with his acoustic set. A downpour in the day obviously did nothing to affect the show and the music.
Adel from Amateur Takes Control was lined up next. With his guitar in hand, he began jamming his instrumental tunes for the world to hear. It felt to me like he was a shy performer, mumbling words in between songs to the small crowd of us standing some distance away. He, along with Nigel and the other local acts, was giving us a taste of what to expect for during their ZoukOut performances, which had recently wrapped up with a reported recordbreaking figure of 27,000 attendees.
A quote from the ATC's official blog reads:
"... Playing in the slight rain watching people walk past you is pretty disheartening. Feels as though your music isn't good enough for them to stop. But hey a few people stopped to listen so it's all good!"
Throughout his performance, Adel focused on putting on a good show; This is despite all the endless flow of passers-by; the noisy on-going construction work; the limitation of space on stage to perform; the slight drizzle; as well as the sounds of birds settling in for the night – common sights and sounds of Orchard Road. Despite all that, music and putting on a good performance were all that mattered in Adel, and if that is not what makes a true musician and artiste, then what is?
